Migration as a Sign of the Times

This paper discusses the relation between migration studies and theology from a practical-theological point of view. It raises issues concerning the perception of the phenomenon of migration and migrants as well. The author shows the relevance of a genuine theological hermeneutic approach that can contribute new and inspiring perspectives to the academic debate on migration. After defining her understanding of practical theology (for instance, in terms of perceiving presence and practice as loci theologici), she discusses the extent to which migration can be seen as a "sign of the times" from different theological approaches. Based on her empirical research she reflects some elementary concepts of migration studies: Are migrants "aliens" or "the others," as one often reads? Are migrants just migrants? To what extent can migration be seen as a gift for society? The answers to these questions have an important impact on both migration studies as part of the social sciences and theology.
