Collecting for the “Volk”: Franz Xaver Kießling, a Völkisch Anti-Semite and Collector

Abstrakt

Franz Xaver Kießling is known as one of the most important collectors of historical objects from the Waldviertel region in northern Lower Austria, and also as an important historian of the same region. However, apart from a local historian, Kießling was also an agitator for the völkisch movement, and is regarded as the founder of the “Aryan paragraph.” The few articles available on Kießling have examined him solely in the context of his work as a collector of historical objects. This article shows, however, that his collecting activities cannot be understood in isolation from his völkisch world view. It was Kießling’s anti-Semitic agitation and his glorification and mystification of the Teutons that led to the extensive collection of objects that can still be found in various Austrian museums today
