Pre-1848 socialism is little known, especially its religious aspects. This article argues that socialist concepts of "religion," albeit much neglected by scholarship, were central to it; that those concepts can only be understood against the background of 18th-century enlightenment discourses; that the socialist systems from the first half of the 19th century can be regarded as the expression of a resulting religious pluralization of new forms of religiosity; and, finally, that those socialist discourses have exerted a lasting influence on the religious landscape of Europe. After discussing the religious ideas of the Saint- Simonians and the Fourierists, and comparing them to the neo-Catholic ideas of Lamennais, the article suggests four major characteristics of socialist religiosity: enlightenment criticism, a certain philosophy of history, a synthesis of science and religion, and a unity of the religious and political orders, a "universal harmony.
