Abstract

King Solomon has both a dark as well as a bright side. In the course of the Old
Testament’s history of tradition, his dark side diminishes until he ultimately becomes a messianic figure. This final point is reached in I and II Chronicles and in the Song of Songs. His dark side includes his many foreign wives and his veneration of foreign gods. Both the Song of Songs and Ecclesiastes critically deal with Solomon’s polyamorous relationships (Song 8:11f; Eccl 2:8; 9:9).
